Perfectly Imperfect Feet

Pregnant parents look forward to counting their baby's 10 perfect fingers and toes. Anything else is rare, but it does happen. Fairly common is seeing a newborn baby’s feet point in opposite directions. This can be due to the baby being squished in the small womb. Other times it can result from the child’s development or as part of a genetic condition. The two most commonly seen foot deformities in newborns are metatarsus adductus and calcaneovalgus. Both involve the baby’s foot positioning and how they were molded inside the womb. These conditions usually improve without treatment and do not cause long-term problems. However, there are more serious congenital disorders of the feet that do require treatment. If you know your child will be born with any kind of foot deformity or discover this at birth, see a podiatrist as soon as possible to have your baby’s feet examined and to obtain suggestions or treatment needed.

Congenital foot problems require immediate attention to avoid future complications. If you have any concerns, contact Dr. Edward D. Hutson of Easton, PA. . Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Congenital foot problems are deformities affecting the feet, toes, and/or ankles that children are born with. Some of these conditions have a genetic cause while others just happen. Some specific foot ailments that children may be born with include clubfeet, polydactyly/macrodactyly, and cleft foot. There are several other foot anomalies that can occur congenitally. What all of these conditions have in common is that a child may experience difficulty walking or performing everyday activities, as well as trouble finding footwear that fits their foot deformity. Some of these conditions are more serious than others. Consulting with a podiatrist as early as possible will help in properly diagnosing a child’s foot condition while getting the necessary treatment underway.

What are Causes of Congenital Foot Problem?

A congenital foot problem is one that happens to a child at birth. These conditions can be caused by a genetic predisposition, developmental or positional abnormalities during gestation, or with no known cause.

What are Symptoms of Congenital Foot Problems?

Symptoms vary by the congenital condition. Symptoms may consist of the following:

  • Clubfoot, where tendons are shortened, bones are shaped differently, and the Achilles tendon is tight, causing the foot to point in and down. It is also possible for the soles of the feet to face each other.
  • Polydactyly, which usually consists of a nubbin or small lump of tissue without a bone, a toe that is partially formed but has no joints, or an extra toe.
  • Vertical talus, where the talus bone forms in the wrong position causing other bones in the foot to line up improperly, the front of the foot to point up, and the bottom of the foot to stiffen, with no arch, and to curve out.
  • Tarsal coalition, when there is an abnormal connection of two or more bones in the foot leading to severe, rigid flatfoot.
  • Cleft foot, where there are missing toes, a V-shaped cleft, and other anatomical differences.
  • Macrodactyly, when the toes are abnormally large due to overgrowth of the underlying bone or soft tissue.

Treatment and Prevention

While there is nothing one can do to prevent congenital foot problems, raising awareness and receiving neonatal screenings are important. Early detection by taking your child to a podiatrist leads to the best outcome possible.

Effective Tips on How to Care For Your Feet

The average person takes hundreds of steps every day, which adds up to thousands per week. This can be one reason why people have achy feet at the end of the day, and practicing everyday foot care techniques may help to alleviate the discomfort. This can begin by washing and drying the feet thoroughly, followed by applying a good moisturizer on them. Many people like to sprinkle powder on their feet, which can help to keep the feet fresh by absorbing excess moisture. It is important to keep the toenails trimmed, and this is properly done by cutting them straight across instead of in a curved fashion. This is an effective way of preventing ingrown toenails from developing. Wearing shoes that fit correctly is another way of taking care of our feet. It is beneficial to choose shoes that have adequate room for the toes to move freely in, which may be helpful in preventing hammertoe and bunions from forming. If you would like additional information and tips on daily foot care habits, please confer with a podiatrist.

Everyday foot care is very important to prevent infection and other foot ailments. If you need your feet checked, contact Dr. Edward D. Hutson from Easton, PA. . Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Everyday Foot Care

Often, people take care of their bodies, face and hair more so than they do for their feet. But the feet are a very important aspect of our bodies, and one that we should pay more attention to. Without our feet, we would not be able to perform most daily tasks.

It is best to check your feet regularly to make sure there are no new bruises or cuts that you may not have noticed before. For dry feet, moisturizer can easily be a remedy and can be applied as often as necessary to the affected areas. Wearing shoes that fit well can also help you maintain good foot health, as well as making it easier to walk and do daily activities without the stress or pain of ill-fitting shoes, high heels, or even flip flops. Wearing clean socks with closed shoes is important to ensure that sweat and bacteria do not accumulate within the shoe. Clean socks help to prevent Athlete’s foot, fungi problems, bad odors, and can absorb sweat.

Effects of Aging on the Feet

The older the foot, the less spring in your step. Because the feet are involved in most of the activities you do throughout your life, they begin to wear out as you age. Natural changes that result from aging are thinning of the skin, joint wear and tear, and decreased muscle strength. Further, the blood or nerve supply to the feet may diminish, and the bones may become more brittle due to osteoporosis, especially in seniors with peripheral artery disease, diabetes, arthritis, or neuropathy. Fat pads in the heels become thinner, which results in heel pain, and joints become less able to withstand impact. Arthritis and wear and tear of the foot are more likely if you have experienced severe foot trauma, overuse from sports or other physical activities, osteoarthritis, or rheumatoid arthritis. Arches may drop, causing flattening of the feet, which adds to the likelihood of arch pain. One way that helps to overcome many of these changes is finding footwear that provides ample arch support and cushioning for tired feet. For more information on dealing with increased causes of foot pain as you age, please consult a podiatrist.

The Elderly and Their Feet

As we age we start to notice many changes in our body, but the elder population may not notice them right away. Medical conditions may prevent the elderly to take notice of their foot health right away. Poor vision is a lead contributor to not taking action for the elderly.

Common Conditions

  • Neuropathy – can reduce feeling in the feet and can hide many life-threatening medical conditions.
  • Reduced flexibility – prevents the ability of proper toenail trimming, and foot cleaning. If left untreated, it may lead to further medical issues.
  • Foot sores – amongst the older population can be serious before they are discovered. Some of the problematic conditions they may face are:
  • Gouging toenails affecting nearby toe
  • Shoes that don’t fit properly
  • Pressure sores
  • Loss of circulation in legs & feet
  • Edema & swelling of feet and ankles

Susceptible Infections

Diabetes and poor circulation can cause general loss of sensitivity over the years, turning a simple cut into a serious issue.

Purchasing Well-Fitting Shoes

Interestingly, research shows that 70% of us do not wear shoes that fit properly in terms of length or width. A key reason for this is that we think we know the size of our feet and we maintain that belief without getting our feet measured regularly. As we age, we lose elasticity in the ligaments and our feet change. The result of shoes that do not fit properly can be discomfort and pain from our feet up into the body. We must remember that our feet are the foundation of our bodies, and foot problems can impact knees, hips, the back and even the neck. While shopping online is quick and easy, going to a store later in the afternoon when the feet are at their largest to try on shoes is a better bet in purchasing shoes that fit well. Wear foot coverings that you would normally wear with the shoes that you are buying and bring orthotics or shoe inserts with you. When considering shoes, think about what you will be wearing them for, the surface you will be walking or running on while wearing them, and how long you will be on your feet. For more advice on purchasing shoes that are best for your feet, consult with a podiatrist who is an expert in this area.

Getting the right shoe size is an important part of proper foot health. Seek the assistance of Dr. Edward D. Hutson from Easton, PA. . Our doctor will provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Getting the Right Shoe Size

There are many people who wear shoes that are the incorrect size, negatively affecting their feet and posture. Selecting the right shoes is not a difficult process, so long as you keep several things in mind when it comes to choosing the right pair.

  • When visiting the shoe store, use the tools available to measure your foot.
  • Be sure there is ‘wiggle room’. There should be about an inch between your toes and the tip of your shoes.
  • Do not always assume you are the same size, as manufacturers run differently.
  • Purchase shoes later in the day, as your feet swell as the day progresses.
  • If a shoe is not comfortable, it is not suitable. Most shoes can’t be ‘broken in’, and comfort should be the ultimate goal when it comes to choosing the right pair of shoes

As our feet hold our body weight and keep us moving, it is important to treat them right. Picking the right pair of shoes can provide your feet comfort and mobility without pain.

Exercise May Promote Stronger Feet

Many people have foot pain. The pain can come from specific foot problems and many patients seek effective relief methods. Exercising the feet may help to improve overall strength as well as be beneficial in preventing certain foot conditions. Many foot exercises and stretches can help to eliminate existing pain when performed correctly. It is helpful for stretches to be held for several seconds. Patients may experience pain while exercising and it is helpful to gauge this by rating it between one and ten. The repetitions of any exercise in which the number is over five may have to be temporarily reduced so the body can adapt to it. Exercise is beneficial for the feet as well as the entire body and a podiatrist can guide you toward choosing the foot exercises that are best for you.

Exercising your feet regularly with the proper foot wear is a great way to prevent injuries and build strength. If you have any concerns about your feet, contact Dr. Edward D. Hutson from Easton, PA. . Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Exercise for Your Feet

Exercise for your feet can help you gain strength, mobility and flexibility in your feet. They say that strengthening your feet can be just as rewarding as strengthening another part of the body. Some foot health exercises can include ankle pumps, tip-toeing, toe rises, lifting off the floor doing reps and sets, and flexing the toes. It is best to speak with Our doctor to determine an appropriate regimen for your needs. Everyone’s needs and bodies are different, and the activities required to maintain strength in the feet vary from individual to individual.

Once you get into a routine of doing regular exercise, you may notice a difference in your feet and how strong they may become.
